Taking Action When You Are Stuck In A Rut

Do you feel stuck in a rut? Does each day seem uninspired and the same as every other day? Are you in a job you no longer love, or in difficult circumstances that don't seem to change? If you can acknowledge that this is your life right now, then that's good news! Why? Because the realization that your life needs to change is the first step in creating a change. The next step is in taking action to find opportunities to help you get out of that rut.

First of all, let me give you a quote:

"The Best men are not those who have waited for chances, but who have taken them, besieged the chance, conquered the chance and made chance their servitor." E. H. Chapin

One of the reasons why people get stuck into a rut in the first place is because they wait for opportunities and change to happen, or they wait for the "right time" to do something, or because they do not really know what they really want.

This attitude is similar to those who think their only chance of being well off is playing the lottery very week, hoping that one day that big finger will point at them and suddenly everything will change.

If you treat your life like a lottery, then it is time to wake up and take action. No-one is going to come along with a magic wand and change it all for you. If you are waiting for that one chance to come and find you, then don't be surprised when one day you realise that the best of your life is behind you and it has been wasted.

If you are one of those people who are waiting for the right time to take action, then guess what? It's NOW! And not just because you are reading this article. It always has been. Time for another quote:

"Whatever you believe or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now." Goethe

It does not matter if you do not know how you are going to achieve what you want; the main thing is to start taking action today. Action produces opportunity, not inaction. Even if your initial step is just to make a commitment to achieving what you want, you will start to make a change in your life. Start making a plan; start stating what you want; start asking people for advice - whatever you need to do - but just start!

What if you don't know what you want? This too will not come to you out of the blue. If you are confused about how to choose the rest of your life, you need to start taking action to clarify your thoughts and make a positive commitment to choosing. If this is difficult for you, there are plenty of people in the world who can help you: life coaches, counsellors and other professional advisers all have methods and techniques for helping you to decide what it is you really want.

The main point here is in taking action. Understand that the change that you need in your life is up to you and no-one else. If you do not take responsibility for your life now, no-one else is going to do it for you.

Think about the people that you admire; the great achievers of the world. Do you imagine that these things just happened to them? Of course not. If all the great achievers in the world had sat around waiting for things to change, our world would be a very different place with very few heroes, if any.

Do not wait for the iron to get hot. Go out and heat it yourself.

Clarify what it is you want, make a plan and then go out and get it. You create your own chances in this life, so don't waste your precious time by waiting for those chances to come to you.

Take responsibility. If you are stuck in a rut, remember that the only person who got you into that rut was yourself, which means that you are also able of getting out of it.

NB. If you feel that it is too difficult to get yourself out of a rut, life coaching can really help by clarifying your goals, developing your confidence and helping you to get motivated. Find out more about career life coaching here.
